A man returns to his hometown to boast about the sights of the outside world. When his childhood friend lures him into the business of oyster farm tourism, his strict father—the vanguard of the family business - sees through the shady scheme instantly. With a sense of restless realism that is akin to New Taiwanese Cinema, Lim captures the unhurried countryside and local faith of a fishing village on 16mm film while exploring the inner lives of oyster farmers.

Director CHAN Ching-lin tells the story of a filmmaker’s unspoken secret in this short film. A director, an actress, a professor and a student meet up on the mountain in an afternoon. The blast of a gunshot inspires the director, yet it also punctures the various lies and discourse of the creative process. As part of Taipei Film Festival’s “In Progress” section, Is Life a Movie was once presented with a live musical score by LIM Giong.

Ohong Village Director

LIM Lungyin

LIM Lungyin is a director, cinematographer, and still photographer from Fengyuan, Taiwan. His films were screened in numerous international film festivals. Departing from his background in international politics, he commenced his studies in cinema directing at the national film school FAMU of the Czech Republic. He engaged in international reportage photography, and his work Distant Echoes, made in the Belarusian side of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, was honored with various journalism awards, and its visual contents were published alongside writings of Nobel-winning Svetlana Alexievich. He co-founded TYDAL Production in 2017 that seeks to bring in a global perspective with grass root essence.

Is Life a Movie Director

CHAN Ching-lin

CHAN Ching-lin was born in 1980 in Taiwan. His works revolve around the poor and underprivileged. His film A Breath from the Bottom won the Best Director at Taipei Film Festival, and was nominated for the Best Short Film at Golden Horse Awards and screened in IFF Rotterdam . His first Feature Film The Island of River Flow (2016) depicts the struggle under capitalism in a capitalist’s world, nominated for the Best New Director in Golden Horse Awards.

Wong Fei Pang

WONG Fei-pang is a Hong Kong independent filmmaker, graduated from the School of Creative Media of City University of Hong Kong. He co-directed Ten Years which won the Best Film in Hong Kong Film Awards, and produced The Murders of Oiso, a Japan, Hong Kong and Korea co-production. This film is funded and premiered in Busan IFF.

Established by producer Kuek Shee Heng, Aview Images is a film making company, also an international film sales agents, they see discovering “New Language and New Film” as their deputy, always trying to find a new possibility of the images. Latest works including Ohong Village, The Island That All Flow By, Arnie, Dossier of the dossier, Is Life A Movie, A Monk and His Mother etc.
